Mid Argyll RFC held Easter camps for young players on Tuesday and Wednesday last week.
Ropework Park hosted P1-3, P4-7 and S1-6 girls’ and boys’ sessions.
Tuesday started with 13 P1-3 girls and boys taking part in rugby-based activities, learning how to pass and catch a ball, score tries and touch tackle.
Combining all of these skills they then took on a game of touch with different variations to challenge them.
Once the P1-3s had found their Easter eggs hidden around the posts, the P4-7s took to the pitch.
A solid number of 16 children took part in this session, most being experienced minis players for Mid Argyll, along with a couple from Campbeltown.
The experienced helped the newcomers get to grips with skills and rules very well, showing great leadership and patience.
They worked on handling skills - catching and passing technique, along with tackle technique - and finished off by a big game of touch rugby.
Wednesday saw S1-6 girls and boys; eight girls and 10 boys in attendance.
They spent the first half of the session developing passing skills, along with spacial awareness and communication.
After a quick break, everyone split into girls and boys to go into separate tackling sessions; developing from single person tackles into game-like scenarios.
There was a massive difference in everyone from the start to beginning.
Grateful thanks were given to the coaches who made the days possible: Jane, Simone, Jim and Drew, who took the Tuesday sessions and Ben, Elliot, Jim and Drew, who took the Wednesday session.
“We are beyond happy with the number of players who took part on these days and look forward to seeing some new faces at training,” said a spokesperson for the rugby club.
Youth training is on every Tuesday after school 4-5pm at Lochgilphead Joint Campus top grass pitch. Message the club’s Facebook page or email drewb.wgcc@outlook.com for more information.
