Sixteen ladies took to the course to brave the elements and compete in Dunaverty Golf Club’s Macmillan Ladies’ Open competition, played over the whole day last Tuesday, May 10.

The ladies playing in the morning and evening had a couple of showers to contend with but the afternoon players got the worst of the weather, with heavy rain, wind and thunder.

Lorna Cook played a steady game despite the afternoon weather, and carded a great score of nett 59 (-6) and took the lead and set the pace.

Following players were unable to match her score, with Mairi MacMillan scoring nett 67 (+2) and Rona Young nett 68 (+3).

Through entrance money, donations and a raffle, £400 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

Results: 1 Lorna Cook, nett 59 (-6); 2 Mairi MacMillan, nett 67 (+2); 3 Rona Young, nett 68 (+3). Lowest scratch: Lorna Ralston, 81.

A few days later, on Saturday May 14, on a nearly perfect golfing day, with a gentle breeze and dry conditions, 16 ladies took to the course during the day/evening to compete in the May medal competition.

Katharine Hardman, in the first group home, was able to take advantage of the calm conditions and carded a respectable score of nett 63 (-2) and took the lead.

Katie Cappello, who also played during the day, was the nearest contender to challenge Katharine but was only able to score nett 66 (+1).

Mairi MacMillan, who played in the evening, made a serious challenge to Katharine’s lead but, despite a valiant effort, narrowly missed taking the lead and scored nett 64 (-1).

Results: 1 Katharine Hardman, nett 63 (-2); 2 Mairi MacMillan, nett 64 (-1); 3 Katie Cappello, nett 66 (+1). Lowest gross: Katharine Hardman 80.
