More than 30 Dunaverty Golf Club members turned out for the club’s New Year competition, each one determined to win the coveted Taylor Tankard.

A dry day with a strong wind promised to make things difficult for the competitors in Sunday’s competition – and this proved the case.

This was the second leg of the Christmas/New Year event and teeing off in the first group was Don Hardman who had won the first leg.

In the companyof Neil Brodie and Alec Soudan, he set about winning the double.

Neil was in great form and took the course by the scruff of the neck by covering the front nine in 34 strokes which included two bogies, a birdie at the fifth, a double bogey at the seventh and an eagle at the ninth.

With three bogies and one double bogey, he managed 39 on the inward half from a nett total of 65.

Don had a steady round of a nett 70 to put him in pole position for the two-leg victory but he would have a long wait for the result.

Ever consistent Keith Crawford reached the turn in 35 strokes and, with bogies at the tenth and fifteenth, he recovered with a birdie at the eighteenth to card another 35 for the best scratch score of the day.

Indicative of the tough conditions was the fact only four other players – Neil Brodie, Scott MacBrayne, Sandy Watson and Campbell MacBrayne – scored under 80.

In the doubles event, the two best nett scores were used to determine the winner with Don Hardman holding off a fast finishing Willie Ralston who got within three shots of him.

Two shots covered the next four finishers.
