Kintyre runners are in for a treat in 2022 as organisers of the challenging Kintyre Way Ultra race have teamed up with friends in Carradale to offer a three-day festival of running with something for athletes of all abilities.

The fun begins on the evening of Friday May 13 with the eight-mile Friday Frolic, a Machrihanish loop that’s perfect for anyone who isn’t quite ready for an ultra.

All participants will receive a memento and light refreshments will be provided by the Ugadale Hotel.

On Saturday May 14, more experienced runners can compete in the 33-mile Kintyre Way Ultra marathon solo or relay.

The start line and registration will be in Machrihanish, with the finish on Kinloch Green in Campbeltown.

While there will be only one checkpoint and relay changeover point at Southend, there will be intermediate water stations and relay runners who wish to run in teams of three can ‘double up’ over the first section.

‘We are very excited to finally be able to deliver the long-awaited ‘southern third’ of the Kintyre Way,’ said an event spokesperson.

‘We’ll have all the usual features of the Kintyre Way Ultra – drop bag transfer, showers, soup, sandwich and cake from Argyll Bakeries, and GPS tracking – and hopefully massage and entertainment will be back on the menu this year too.

‘We are, as ever, very grateful to our generous prize sponsors Glengyle Distillery, Kintyre Gin and Fyne Ales, and to Machrihanish Holiday Park and the Ugadale Hotel for help with logistics.’

Entries will open on Saturday January 8 on Entry Central, with three options: the Ultra only, the Frolic only or the Ultra and the Frolic.

Information will be added to the Kintyre Way Ultra Facebook page and website at www.kintyrewayultra.org, with more details available nearer the time.

‘As you can imagine with an event which takes place over 33 miles, a lot of volunteers are needed to make it work as it has in the past,’ said the spokesperson. ‘If you would like to help in any capacity, please get in touch by emailing volunteering@kintyrewayultra.org

‘If your business can see an opportunity to work with us, or offer sponsorship, then please email info@kintyrewayultra.org

To round off the weekend of running events, organisers have teamed up with The Great Carradale Canter committee, to offer 5K and 10K races, with a 5K option for juniors, starting and finishing at Carradale Harbour, from 11.30am on Sunday May 15.

Full details will be on the Great Carradale Canter Facebook page shortly and bookings can be made via Q-Buster from January 8.
