Dunaverty Golf Club’s Amod McNeil gents’ pairs event is normally held on a knock-out basis, with the pairs arranging dates to play their ties.
This year, however, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided to hold it as a one-day competition, on Sunday August 29, in a Texas Scramble format.
Each player in the two-man team had to take six drives each and were given 15 per cent of their combined handicaps.
This led to very close scoring on a perfect day of light winds and no blinding sun.
With 32 strokes on the outward nine and 33 on the inward, Harry MacLean and Roy McKinven finished on nett 60.7, just 0.2 ahead of John Brown and Donald Brown (Southend).
They were closely followed by Peter Paterson and Neil Barlow who shot a nett 60.5.
Danny Halliday, fresh from his hole-in-one the previous day, in partnership with David McGeachy, hit an excellent 31 on the way out and 34 coming back to give them a winning total of 60.1.
Result: 1 Danny Halliday and David McGeachy 65-4.4=60.1, 2 Peter Paterson and Neil Barlow 66-5.5=60.5, 3 Harry MacLean and Roy McKinven 65-4.3=60.7, 4 John Brown and Donald Brown (Southend) 65-4.1=60.9, 5 Sandy Watson and James Finlay 66-4.3=61.7, 6 David MacBrayne and Dougie Graham 66-4.2=61.8.
