Islay’s loss, Shetland’s gain
That was one of the comments made when it was announced that Campbeltown man Jamie Conley would be moving from Islay Airport to Sumburgh Airport in Shetland.
Another was that he has a great head on young shoulders, and that is very true. Very early on, Jamie set his sights on a career in the fire service and he has worked incredibly hard not only to make that happen but to land a senior role at a young age.
Like many other careers, it involved some sacrifices too, including moving away from his hometown, his family and his friends.
Campbeltown Grammar School, which Jamie attended, has come under fire recently for its position on a league table of Scottish secondary schools based on exam results.
Jamie’s career success shows what is possible without going on to further education.
That said, he is also working towards a degree.
He sets a wonderful example that, no matter your situation, there are many ways to achieve success.
Fire safety reminder
Jamie’s former Campbeltown Fire Station colleagues spent hours dealing with a completely avoidable grassland fire last weekend.
This could have been so much worse but thanks to our dedicated fire fighters the blaze was quickly extinguished.
Please spare them a thought and act responsibly if you choose to light a fire.
