A Kintyre man, who had to wade through ‘filthy’ flood water to get from his front door to his car on several occasions over the last five years, has spoken of his relief following the completion of nearly £1 million of upgrades to Scottish Water’s network infrastructure near his home.

Iain Ferguson, of Benrioch, near the Moy, spoke to the Courier after the £950,000 project, which involved replacing approximately three miles of pipework between Campbeltown and Machrihanish, was finished.

Iain said: ‘My wife and myself are very pleased and relieved to get this confirmation that Scottish Water has finally completed the job.

‘It took more than four years of complaining and countless bursts and floods from the old main to cajole them into action but at least the contractors got on with the job and completed it expeditiously and professionally over the last 12 months.’

The project began in January 2020 but was delayed for some months due to Covid-19 restrictions. McFadyens Contractors Ltd carried out the work on behalf of Amey, which was assigned by Scottish Water.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs regional manager, said: ‘Following a history of bursts on the network, causing interruption to supplies for customers, we’re extremely pleased to announce that this work has now been completed.

‘We’re sure that the upgrades we’ve made here will give the  community some comfort, with increased resilience in the water network improving the service we provide.

‘Our customers in the area can continue to enjoy fresh, great tasting drinking water.’

Councillor John Armour welcomed the news that the work had been successfully delivered. He said: ‘I am delighted that after highlighting this serious problem, with many bursts over the last few years, the new system has now been completed.

‘It will be a great comfort to those impacted by the loss of service due to the bursts and also a relief to  residents who have, at times, found themselves knee-deep in water outside their front doors after bursts.

‘With Amey using a Kintyre business to carry out the work, it helped to ensure precious jobs were sustained during what has been a very uncertain time for everyone over the last nine months.’

While also welcoming the news, Councillor Donald Kelly feels Scottish Water could have done more to prevent further disruptions occurring in the area.

He said: ‘I am pleased that this section of the pipeline has been completed but feel that the entire length should have been done. To leave the section between Stewarton and Drumlemble is, in my opinion, just asking for further problems.

‘That said, I do welcome Scottish Water’s commitment to resolving a situation at Low Askomil but would welcome engagement between the company and the residents of Glenramskill in an effort to resolve an ongoing problem on that side of the loch.’
