Joan Pirie and Jimmy Barr are joint winners of the Ayrshire Cattle Society Cup, after both scoring 277 points in the now biennial Kintyre and District Ayrshire Breeders Club stock judging competition.
It was held at Gartvaigh Farm, Southend, on Friday February 1, by kind permission of the Cameron family.
Exactly 100 participants returned scorecards over the six classes, which were ably judged by Graeme McMillan, a nephew of the Camerons.
Mr McMillan worked at Gartvaigh in his schooldays, giving him the secure grounding in all things dairy which has enabled him to secure a post at Sandyford, Ayr, one of the top Ayrshire herds in the country.
After tea, sandwiches and hot sausage rolls, provided by the hosts, which were deemed ‘very welcome’ on a frosty night, were served, the prizes were graciously presented by Elaine Cameron.
As well as announcing Jimmy and Joan as winners of the Ayrshire Cattle Society Cup, Mrs Cameron declared Douglas Earnshaw, with 264 points, the winner of the Alta Cup for Young Farmers.
The evening was concluded by a vote of thanks by the chairman to all concerned in the evening’s success.
