Natasha reaches regional finals

Grammar School pupil Natasha Lee emerged as winner of the Argyll and Bute heat of the Future Chef competition when she travelled to Rothesay last month.

The S3 pupil’s menu was a pork mushroom medley with Panchetta and black pudding pilaf which was served with roasted tomatoes in garlic oil.

This was followed by berry and lemon Mille Feuille served with an almond-infused quenelle of cream.

Since she was very young Natasha has wanted to become a chef and enjoys home economics at school.

She is planning to study hospitality and work as a chef in a restaurant, making her success in the Future Chef competition an impressive first step towards her future career.

Natasha went forward to the Scottish regional final at the Thistle Hotel, Inverness on January 14 and if she is successful she will be off to London for the UK final. NO_c03files01_Natasha_Lee

District councillors gave the thumbs-up to controversial plans for the Cloanaig Estate when decision-day arrived on Monday.

However there was only one vote in it.

Councillors on the planning committee voted six to five in favour of the project being approved after carrying out a site inspection – as long as certain conditions are met before the Forestry Authority makes a final decision.

The proposals have sparked bitter debate in the district since the estate came under the control of the Danish AAGEV Jensen Foundation, with petitions both for and against the plans attracting hundreds of signatures.

The conditions are aimed at maintaining views towards Arran and the Paps of Jura, nature preservation, preventing potential pollution, securing public access and diversifying the tree species.

Deafeating the pong

Are Campbeltown ratepayers prepared to pay an extra 8¾d on the burgh’s rates to try to get rid of the notorious pong on the Esplanade at low tide?

This, in the estimation of Councillor W. S. G. Craig, is what it would cost to have a small dredger built, to be used for clearing up sewage and keeping the Inner Harbour’s deep water channel free of silt.

Councillor Craig told the council’s monthly meeting, on Monday evening that the 8¾d would provide for the cost of the ship and its annual running expenses with a crew of two men.

He said: ‘I don’t think any ratepayer would grudge 8¾d to get rid of the smell.’

Provost Daniel McKinven said this was a step in the right direction and suggested the matter should be handed over to the Public Health Committee to be looked into further.

Councillor Craig, who has always been concerned with the ugly smell in the Dalintober area when the tide is out, agreed with the rest of the council.

Military Medal for Piper John Mclean

It is officially intimated that that the Military Medal has been awarded to Piper John McLean, Canadian Infantry, for conspicuous gallantry on the field on September 14 1918.

Piper Mclean is the second son of Private John McLean and Mrs Mclean late of Summerhill Farm and now The Walk, Dalintober.

He is one of five brothers, all of whom have served their King and Country, and all of whom have been wounded; while one has paid the supreme sacrifice.

We cordially congratulate Piper McLean on the distinction conferred upon him.

In thus gaining honour for himself, his family and his unit, he has done credit to his native district, the country of his adoption and the Empire at large.

That he may be long spared to wear his decoration will be the wish of all who know him.
