An overcast but bright Boxing day proved ideal for the 47 athletes working off their Christmas excess on Westport beach.

Young South Kintyre Harriers Handicap Champion Niamh Quinn crossed the Slog in the Sand line first.

Niamh had competed in the 5km race while full distance runners battered 10km across the beach.

In the mens’ race Garry Muir 37.05 returned to winning form having lost his crown, in 2017, to Stuart McGeachy.

Muir was more than two minutes ahead of second placed Alex Souden 40.26. He was followed by third placed Gary Turner in 41.05.

In the ladies race, the winner, Jennifer Reid 43.33, was nearly five minutes faster than runner-up Susan Turner 48.24 and Elaine Cameron 51.02, in third, slipped a bit behind her 50 minute time from 2017.

For further Slog in the Sand pictures and the full results see inside pages 30 and 31.
