Fire fighters expect to work through the night after Machrihanish golf clubhouse was destroyed by fire this afternoon.

Five tenders, two from Campbeltown, and one each from Tarbert, Lochgilphead and Carradale attended.

Thirty fire fighters are fighting the blaze and continue to damp down the fire which the Courier understands spread through the roof void.

Firefighters were paged at about 1.30pm following the alarm being sounded at the clubhouse.

The club’s steward and his family have been left homeless as the blaze destroyed their flat.

The Courier understands the Kintyre community is rallying round and one supermarket has supplied food to the emergency services fighting the blaze.
