Whether it’s a handbag or jewellery to match an outfit, a gift for someone special or a new battery for a watch, the chances are Campbeltown’s D M Brown will have it.

But shoppers will need to look elsewhere when the iconic gift shop closes its doors in the next couple of months.

Marjorie Brown, 62, who has run the family business for nearly 30 years, has sold the shop, deciding to spend more time with her family.

D M Brown was established in 1948 by Marjorie’s father Duncan, now aged 92, as a toy shop in Longrow, before moving along the street to smaller premises as a gift shop.

Duncan retired a year after moving to the current Main Street spot nearly 30 years ago.

Marjorie helped out in the shop during school holidays and on Saturdays from the age of 12, and other than a year working at Mr O’Neill’s dental surgery and five years at the shipyard, it is the only place she has worked since school.

D M Brown was a member of Campbeltown Trading Association for 16 years and Marjorie told the Courier that the highlight of her career was the work she and her late friend Mairi Kennedy carried out with the association to get Christmas lights for the first time in Campbeltown.

In her retirement Marjorie plans to give Duncan and her mother, Margaret, 90, some ‘TLC’, as well as spending more time with her two children, Keith and Gail, four grandchildren, and her husband, Stephen Dunn, who retired last year.

Marjorie thanked everyone for the support the business has received over the years.

She said: ‘Thank you to all customers who have shopped with us over the last 70 years that D M Brown has existed. Both my dad and I appreciate and are very gratefully for the support.

‘Thanks also to the people who have worked here over the years, including Fiona McEachran who has been with us for the last 13 years.’

Between now and the shop’s closure, all stock is being sold for half price or less.

Marjorie expects to lock up for the last time around the end of May or the beginning of June, depending on how long the stock lasts.

She wants to remind customers that vouchers must be redeemed, and clubs must be paid, before the end of May.

Of the shop’s new owners, Marjorie said: ‘It’s a new business altogether – the owners have lots of exciting new ideas, so it’ll be a nice change.’
