A block of quartz inset in a Low Askomil wall has created much comment since being posted on social media page Old Campbeltown and Surrounding Area.

It is appears to be a cat and each generation of children seem to know it by a different name, such as the lucky cat or the spitting cat.

Among the comments were the following:

Gail McKay: ‘My memory of this is you make a wish and spit on the cat, that’s why it’s called the spitting cat. It works too, I wished for a fabulous mum.’

Christine McCallum: ‘Never walked past without patting it for good luck!!!’

Lindsay Farmer: ‘Showed it to a friend yesterday. Always looked at it when I walked home or to the town!’

It took the Courier reporter two attempts to find the correct place and discovering it on a raw afternoon certainly felt lucky.

If anyone knows any more about the cat email the Courier on editor@campbeltowncourier.co.uk or message on Facebook.
