A scaffolder hit his pal with a hammer and he responded with a baseball bat in an Esplanade fight.

John Gillespie, 36, of 7 Birgidale Terrace, and Colin Campbell, 40, of Flat 3/1, Raithburn Avenue, both in Castlemilk, Glasgow, admitted a charge of engaging in a stand-up fight on November 7 last year.

After hearing that the pair’s long friendship has ended, Sheriff Patrick Hughes said: ‘This is an extremely distressing matter for any member of the public to have seen.

‘Your £400 fine each is a direct alternative to imprisonment.’

He added that any failure to pay would result in jail.
