Youngsters leapt at the chance to compete in the first of four local indoor athletic competitions.

The Mid Argyll heat of the Argyll series of Sports Hall Athletics was held last Sunday in Lochgilphead Joint Campus.

The next is Mull on Saturday, February 3, at Salen Primary School, followed by the Oban area competition at Atlantis Leisure on Wednesday, February 28.

The Kintyre competition is planned for Sunday, March 4, in Victoria Hall, Campbeltown.

Mid Argyll Athletic Club has been promoting this form of indoor athletics  every winter since 1994 using specialist equipment for various running, jumping and throwing events.

Each area contest provides competition for six age groups, from under seven to under 17, with seven different running, jumping and throwing events.

The best of the young athletes from each event will progress to the Argyll final, at Atlantis Leisure in Oban on Sunday, March 25.

A spokesperson said: ‘This is an ideal opportunity for youngsters to come and try athletics for the first time taking part indoors in a warm and dry environment.’

Everyone taking part will receive a medal and trophies will be awarded to the overall winners in each age category. There will be an entry fee of £2 per competitor, and £5 for families of three or more.
