A cow of Robert Millar’s from High Cattadale lead the dairy prices at a recent prime cattle sale.

166 cattle were sold at the Caledonian Marts sale, comprising 95 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, and 71 cast cows and bulls.

Bullocks sold to a top of 248ppkg for a British Blue from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie to J Hastie Butchers, Markinch, and to £1626.24 for a British Blue from W I Wainwright and Sons, Todhall Farm, Cupar, purchased by H A Black and Sons Butchers, Bathgate.

Heifers sold to 248ppkgtwice D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees and one from A Galbraith, Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow purchased twice by H A Black and Sons Butchers, Bathgate and T Johnston, Butchers, Falkirk, and to £1764.72 for a Limousin from C Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden purchased by H A Black and Sons, Butchers, Bathgate.

Young bulls sold to 188p from L Laird, Lochhead, East Wemyss and to £1624.30 from D & L Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond.

Average prices: Prime bullocks: 209ppkg. Prime heifers: 218ppkg. Young bulls: 184ppkg. Beef cows: 110ppkg. Dairy cows: 88ppkg (for a plainer show forward).

Heifers ppkg: 246p Classlochie and Brockwoodlees; 244p Faskine; 240p and 236p Upper Kinneil; 235p Broadleys and Balquharrage; 234p Turniemoon and Faskine; 228p Pitcairn; 226p Faskine and Bankhead (Kerr). Bullocks per head: £1550 Turniemoon; £1541 Bankhead; £1521 Todhall; £1461 Brockwoodlees; £1438 Easterton; £1426 Molemont. Heifers per head: £1594 Brockwoodlees; £1538 Upper Kinneil; £1532 Brockwoodlees; £1522 Upper Kinneil; £1517 Brockwoodlees; £1502 Upper Kinneil.

Also forward were 71 cast cows and bulls.

With leaner cows a bit harder to cash, the overall average was back on the week, with a large demand for finished cows.

Beef cows sold to £1620 for a Limousin from A T Mitchell and Son, Nether Glinns, Fintry and to 180p for the same beast.

Dairy cows sold to £780 from R Nelson, Blairmains, Culross and to 112p from R Millar, High Cattadale, Campbeltown.

Other leading prices: Beef cows per head: £1400 Airthrey Kerse; £1380 Forthview; £1200 West Mains; £1130 Forthview; £1100 Bogleys. Beef cows per kilo: 174p Airthrey Kerse; 160p West Mains; 147.5p Forthview (twice); 143p Bogleys; 140p Bowridge. Dairy cows per head: £720 Waterside; £630 High Cattadale.
