A Strong contingent of Campbeltown athletes geared up and put their best feet forward in the inaugural Cowal Way Chase bike race, ultra run and relay.

The competitors travelled to Portavadie, on the Cowal peninsula, where the races, organised by No Fuss Events in partnership with the Colintraive and Glendaruel Development Trust, kicked off along the Way.

In the gruelling 50km ultra run, with nearly 4,000ft of ascent, covering varied terrain of hard-packed paths, loose gravel and forest roads, Sarah McFadzean, a member of Campbeltown Running Club (CRC) was the third lady home, while two-person teams from the club almost swept the board in the ultra relay, coming in second to eighth on the leader board.

Mrs McFadzean, who has run more than 10 marathons and two ultras, said: ‘It was very nice to pick up a prize.
‘I’m training for another ultra, the Tweed Valley ultra in Peebles which is 65km and takes place on November 19 so I was using the Cowal Way ultra as a training run.’

In the bike race, a 72km gravel road ride, Simon Freeman of the Kintyre Way Sloggers team came sixth, while CRC member Dominic Sharkey finished in 12th place.

Kintyre’s sportsmen and women show a huge amount of dedication to their athletic pursuits and will surely be looking ahead to their next challenges.
