A shopkeeper moved from behind the counter and joined a youth worker to judge entries in the fifth Isle of Gigha root and industrial show.

Joe Teale of Ardminish stores and Kenny Wilson had the task of picking beautiful parsnips and potatoes as well as identifying a winning ugly vegetable at the event on Saturday September 23.

Afterwards Mr Teale said: ‘My tastebuds took a pounding trying loads of tea loafs.’

Slightly more unusaul entries included in the industrial section a glass of milkshake and a matchbox containing items beginning with ‘S’.

The village hall was packed to capacity with holiday makers, islanders and 117 exhibits, as well as the Macmillan coffee afternoon and prize giving which raised a total of £963.

A spokesperson said: ‘The overall root section winner was Catriona Walker and the industrial section winner was Maggie Wilkieson, congratulations to them both.

‘All cakes and raffle prizes were donated and thanks goes to everyone involved in making the day a great success once again.’

The prize winners in each category were: Root section – three potatoes: 1 and  2 Susan Allan, 3= Willie McSporran and John Martin; three parsnips: 1 = Maggie Wilkieson and Catriona Walker; three purple top swedes: John Martin; three carrots: 1 Willie McSporran, 2 Maggie Wilkieson, 3 Gigha pre-5 unit and Maggie Wilkieson; three red onions: 1 Catriona Walker, 2 Archie Walker, 3= Rob Wilkieson and Susan Allan; three white onions: 1 Catriona Walker, 2 Archie Walker, 3= Andy Oliver and Maggie Wilkieson; three beetroots: Catriona Walker; three leeks: Catriona Walker; one ugly vegetable: 1 Maggie Wilkieson, 2 Archie Walker, 3 Gigha pre-5 unit and Susan Allan; one large potato: Rob Wilkieson and Willie McSporran.
