A Cowal man and his dog are the best herders in Kintyre.

Last Friday Stuart Davidson and Hope won Kintyre Sheepdog Trials’ Ian McDougall trophy for the best performance on the field at Clochkeil farm.

The trial, judged by Roddy McDiarmid from Cairndow, was packed with 55 dogs competing watched by other shepherds and a few groups of tourists.

A Kintyre Sheepdog Trials Association spokesperson said: ‘We would like to thank our main sponsors, P McKerral & Co for providing haulage, Andrew Smith & Son, D McNair & Son and Westwards Veterinary Practice.

‘Thanks also to all local businesses who provided donations for the raffle.

‘We would also like to give a big thank you to the ladies of the local branch of Cancer Research UK who ran the catering making a profit of £170 which will be donated to their charity.’

The full results and trophy winners are as follows: Ian McDougall trophy for best performance on field: S L Davidson with Hope, J and K Martin confined cup: A McCuish with Moss, MacAllister-Hall cup for best performance by a Kintyre shepherd: L Clark with Mirk, Wilson Dogmeal trophy – confined to Kintyre: A McCuish with Moss, Alexander Helm memorial cup – best outrun, lift and fetch – confined to Kintyre: A McCuish with Moss, Neil Stewart memorial cup for best pen on field: C Davidson with Cap, Andrew Dickson memorial challenge cup for best two dog aggregate: S L Davidson with Hope and Queen, Richard Semple trophy for best shed on field – confined to Kintyre: A McCuish with Moss, Merck Sharp & Dhrome shield for best drive on field: A Carnegie with Rook, Honda ATV Cup for best dog from Argyll: S L Davidson with Hope.

Points results: Open: 1 S L Davidson with Hope: 91; 2 J McKillop with Joe: 90; 3 A Carnegie with Rook: 88; 4 P Martin with Jill: 87; 5 M McNally with Fin: 85; 6 S L Davidson with Queen: 83 (decided on out bye work); 7 A Carnegie with Jess: 83; 8 A McCuish with Moss: 82 (decided on out bye work).
