Campbeltown creamery can add a new cheese to its list of award-winning products, after smoking the competition to win gold at the Royal Highland Show.

The creamery’s latest creation, smoked Mull of Kintyre extra mature cheddar, was entered into the ‘speciality cheese: smoked’ category and scooped the top award.

The product, which is still in very early development and is not available to purchase yet, also had success at the British Cheese Awards at the Royal Bath and West Show in early June, winning gold.

Paul Stewart, marketing executive at First Milk, the UK’s largest farmer-owned co-operative which owns the creamery, said: ‘Everyone involved, from the farmers to our Campbeltown Creamery staff, are incredibly proud of the cheddar we produce and are especially pleased to have our work recognised.

‘The smoked cheddar category is a fast growing sector and we see a real gap in the market for a premium quality oak smoked Scottish cheddar.

‘The strong and bold flavours of our Mull of Kintyre cheddar combined with naturally oak-smoked flavour is a true marriage made in heaven and we’re now in discussion with various retailers to have this award winning cheddar available in a store near you.’

The Campbeltown creamery, employing 33 people, is supplied by 31 Kintyre dairy farms, making cheeses including the world famous Mull of Kintyre cheddar, which won silver at the Highland Show for its mild variant, as well as butter for Scottish Pride, which also won silver.

Mull of Kintyre cheddar is on show at Speciality Food’s Summer Fancy Food Show, in New York, and is listed on food wholesaler Bidfood’s Simply Scottish catalogue.
