southend-highland-games-20_c30sou07A HOST of competitors turned out to put on a superb show for the crowds at the Southend Highland Games on Saturday, July 21 2012.

There was a range of entertainment and sporting action, with many of the events contested to a high standard.

Stand-out performances were given from locals Matthew Turner for the men, and for the women, Ashleigh Connor and Fiona Graham.

Some of the more unusual contests included women’s broom throwing and mother and toddler piggyback racing, with a variety of prizes on offer for the dog show entrants.

Children’s events were full up, with sack racing and three-legged races complementing the more traditional sprints.

Aside from track and field, the highland dancing was one of the highlights of the evening, with plenty of competition making the judge’s task in deciding winners a difficult one.
