CAMPBELTOWN will once again have a community bonfire this year on Guy Fawkes’ Night, thanks to the town’s firefighters and cadets and the members of Dalintober and Millknowe Residents’ Association.
Three years ago the residents’ association came up with the idea of a community bonfire and the firefighters supported them 100 per cent;since then the number of calls to the fire service for bonfire and firework incidents has dropped dramatically each year.
‘It’s an excellent thing for the community,’ said Paul Souden from Campbeltown Fire station. ‘By working in partnership we have reduced the number of calls to a low level that’s previously been unheard of.’
The Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service gives a donation of £1,000 from the Chief Officer’s Fund and Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) will donate £200 this year and all this helps Graeme Harvey and fellow firefighters to buy, plan and set off an impressive firework display.
