A NEW idea to help Campbeltown survive as carbon fuels like oil and gas become more expensive and sparse has been proposed by Councillor John Semple.

Making Campbeltown into a transition town would mean concentrating on growing more of our own produce and focusing on local resources available.

COULD you soon have to pay for car parking in Campbeltown?

Councillors have been looking at the question of parking and considered establishing a council-operated car park; Campbeltown is the only major town in Argyll and Bute not to have a council-maintained car park and everywhere else these are pay-and-display.

FOR the first time, the Dalintober and Millknowe Tenants and Residents Association held a family bonfire night at Kinloch Green on November 5.

The committee decided to do this to stop the vandalism and illegal bonfires that happened in previous years; Strathclyde Police gave a donation from the Police Well Being Fund for the event.

It was a great success and more than 350 people went along to join in the fun and hot dogs and sparklers were available free of charge.

With all the talk about the ferry service restarting between Campbeltown and Ballycastle, here’s a flash back to the opening of the ferry terminal in Campbeltown in 2000. Agnes McKenzie of Ayr sent us this photograph of some of the people who turned up to watch the ceremony.

Agnes and family lived in Stewarton for 40 years before moving to Ayr ‘and loved every minute’.

RECENT bad weather has highlighted the urgent need for lairage for livestock to be included in any plans to upgrade the ferry terminal at Kennacraig.Vehicles carrying livestock to Islay or Jura can arrive at the mainland ferry terminal to find that scheduled sailings have been delayed or cancelled due to bad weather.

To comply with animal welfare regulations the animals cannot be held indefinitely within the vehicles, however, biosecurity regulations introduced to limit the risk of cross infection in the wake of Foot and Mouth Disease prevent these animals being off-loaded at any neighbouring farms.

United enjoy Ibrox visit

A special visit to Ibrox Football Stadium for Campbeltown United under 14s saw them thoroughly enjoy their trip.

They were joined by John Gillespie and Alan Glendinning and after a few strings were pulled were able to get a tour round Rangers ground on Saturday.

The squad were up playing at a park next to the stadium and thought it would be good to get a visit to the grounds and after John wrote a letter a tour was put on especially for them as they don’t usually take tours on a Saturday.

McEachran and Robertson, Livingstone and McEachran and Nugent Joiners sponsored the Ibrox trip.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Campbeltown United should contact John Gillespie on 552309, as most trips cost in the region of £200 and anything would be much appreciated to help the squads out.
