A NEW idea to help Campbeltown survive as carbon fuels like oil and gas become more expensive and sparse has been proposed by Councillor John Semple.
Making Campbeltown into a transition town would mean concentrating on growing more of our own produce and focusing on local resources available.
Councillor Semple raised the subject at Monday’s community council meeting and although nothing has been started he is keen to get the community council involved if something was to go ahead, to make Campbeltown the second transition town in Scotland.
Portobello near Edinburgh became the first town to adapt to being a transition town in 2005. They haven’t made any drastic changes but have been concentrating on reducing plastic bags and carbon dioxide emissions by organising kids’ bike parades and car free days.
Chairman of Argyll and Bute Council’s environmental policy and performance group, Councillor Semple said: ‘There are already quite a lot of projects working towards various transition in Campbeltown. It’s about bringing them together and involving the community council and other groups. A particular group that is interested in the town itself and the surrounding communities could drive this.
‘It is something to promote us as a town although it is only an idea at the moment. If there are people who are particularly interested in looking more closely at transition feel free to contact me.’
