The majestic Waverley approaches Tarbert for what could be the last time. To buy: a34wav02 |
IT WAS a sad day for Tarbert on Tuesday as world famous paddle steamer Waverley sailed from the village pier for what could be the very last time.
More than 130 years of history came to an end after engineers declared Tarbert pier no longer suitable to accommodate larger ships.
Despite constant efforts by Tarbert Harbour Authority, it has been unsuccessful in applying for grants to save the pier. Chairman Alan Macdonald said: ‘We have lost virtually all the traffic that used the pier so our income stream is very small.
‘We need about £750,000 to put a 20 year life back into the pier, and between £50,000 and £100,000 could put another two or three years back into the pier. However, we have applied for every grant available with no success.
‘We knew it was on the horizon that today could be the last day the Waverley calls at Tarbert, but we will keep on trying to reinstate the pier.’ David Rodger, chairman of Waverley Excursions Ltd said: ‘It is so important to maintain Tarbert pier as it is on the original Royal route and if this pier goes, it will be very difficult to bring it back.
‘It would be a shame if there was no available pier at Loch Fyne for next year’s year of the homecoming.
‘Everyone must get behind the Tarbert Harbour Authority and help them in their quest to reinstate larger ships and keep the pier.’
