Residents of Harbour View with Councillor Donald Kelly. To buy: c24har01

RESIDENTS of a new housing development in Campbeltown said this week they have put up with their drafty windows and expensive heating bills for long enough.

Most of the residents of the Harbour View development are elderly and have joined forces once again and approached Councillor Donald Kelly to try to get something done after attempts in the past have failed to get the windows changed.

The problem is that an easterly or north-easterly wind blowing through the sash and cord style windows means the residents are unable to sit comfortably in their sitting rooms because of the draught.

Residents say it is costing them a fortune trying to heat the houses.

Councillor Donald Kelly said: ‘The length of time this saga has been going on for is totally unacceptable and has to be resolved as a matter of urgency. I have met with the residents and seen the problems they are experiencing at first hand.’

Argyll and Bute Council have welcomed further application from Fyne Homes to explore different options to replace the current windows and resolve the problem.

Councillor Kelly continued: ‘Initially the windows were installed as a condition of planning consent being granted.

‘However given the problems with the windows the council’s planning department have indicated that they would look favourably at supporting a further application from Fyne Homes for suitably designed replacements which would resolve the problem.

‘The ball is firmly in Fyne Homes’ court and I would hope that they will treat this issue as a priority. It is my intention to have further dialogue with Mr McDonald, the director of Fyne Homes, and the maintenance director Janet McAllister regarding their plans for Harbour View.’

Harbour View resident Richard Cameron said: ‘We have been through it all before four years ago but would like to thank Donald for bringing this on a bit further, we were getting nowhere before. We had no choice in the matter, the windows we had in were the windows that were staying. When there’s an east or north east wind the front of the house in uninhabitable, even with the heating on the windows are draughty.’
