INDUSTRIAL action at Campbeltown Airport which could have disrupted flights has been suspended to allow further discussions to take place.
The 24-hour strike action was due to take place on Monday June 9 but has now been suspended, although the second strike for July 4 is still due to take place.
Strike action was decided after members of the Unite trade union rejected Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) 2007/2008 pay award.
HIAL operates 10 airports in the north and west of Scotland including Campbeltown, Islay and Barra.
The company is wholly owned by the Scottish Governemnt, and HIAL is subject to the UK Government’s cap on public sector wages and was limited to a maximum two per cent pay increase for 2007/2008.
Unite’s membership at HIAL is principally made up of non-managerial grades within the Airport Fire Service which provides mandatory rescue and firefighting cover at its airports.
A HIAL spokesman said: ‘The union has agreed to suspend the action planned for 9 June to allow further discussions to take place. We welcome this move which will allow air traffic to operate as normal next Monday. We are now liaising with the union to identify suitable dates to get round the table again.’
