THE rising cost of fuel is having devastating effects on a number of companies in Kintyre.
One company is rumoured to have paid off staff as costs have increase; the fishing industry are struggling to make ends meet and are being forced to make crucial decisions of whether to send their boats out, farmers are finding haulage charges increasing and bus companies have began keeping a close eye on the situation.
The price of food is set to rise, having a bigger impact on the pocket of everyone locally as it is costing more and more to transport goods to Kintyre.
Peter McKerral, of peter McKerral haulage, employs around 30 staff and is hoping it will not come to pay offs.
He said: ‘The increase is having a knock-on effect for our customers as the prices of transporting goods has had to go up.’
Bus and coach company West Coast Motors, is keeping an eye on the situation.
Colin Craig, managing director said: ‘This has added a huge impact onto our buses and we are having to look very closely at all our services. We need to make sure that there isn’t anything pulling our buses down and we are keeping an eye on it at the moment.
