THE ongoing problem of gardens and street areas in Saddell being flooded has been resolved thanks to a new flood relief project which has took four years to implement.
For years the garden and street areas were prone to flooding when there was a lot of wet weather and the ground was unable to absorb the surface water.
This also resulted in flooding to the main road, but now the new system is designed to catch that surface water coming from the high ground to the west of the houses.
Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) worked with Councillor Rory Colville, Argyll and Bute Council Roads, Scottish Water and local farmer Terrance Glen to implement the system.
The flood relief system consists of a cattle grid to catch silt and water as well as a trench at the back of the residents’ gardens.
Councillor Rory Colville is delighted to achieve a result through a partnership with the organisations. He said: ‘This has been a long standing problems for the residents of Saddell and I am delighted we have came to a solution. As well as solving this problem, hopefully this will mean increased visitors numbers to Saddell Abbey with the removal of mud from the road.’
The project was made possible by contributions from Scottish Water, money from capital receipts from Argyll and Bute Council’s area committee and money from ACHA.
Andrea Hopkins, who is a resident in Saddell and was affected by the rain and silt coming in to her garden said: ‘This is absolutely great.
‘When the water used to come down here and into the village you needed your wellies to get out of your house. Hopefully when we get a big batch of rain we will see if it will solve the problem or not.’
