GEORGE McMillan is bowing out from the newspaper shop he has owned and run on Main Street after 32 years.

He has run the business with the help of his sister, daughter and grandchildren and a very loyal band of staff

Kintyre born and bred George was first a miner and then became the proprietor of a fish and chip shop before taking over the newsagents’ shop.

He has also given a lifetime of dedicated public service.

George is a Labour stalwart and served as a councillor for decades; amongst his achievements was the improvement of the Campbeltown housing stock.

To this day he still serves on various committees, including the Senior Citizens’ and the Campbeltown Heritage Centre and is an honorary sheriff.

He has been awarded the MBE for his public service. The shop has been sold to another Campbeltown shopkeeper Mr Alan Khan and will continue as a newsagents. George will be seen at the shop for a while longer helping with the transition of the business.
