A83 ‘cracking’ concern
Published:  22 May, 2008

CRACKING on the steep hill on the A83 at Bealach a Chaochain ‘is a cause for concern’, councillors have been told.

Councillor Rory Colville asked for Argyll and Bute Council to keep monitoring the road edge because a land slip here would all but cut off South Kintyre.

The road at this point is cut into the hill, with no verge on the landward side and a small one on the seaward side. There has been movement in the road in the past and a concrete beam was installed; it is not possible to carry out a full visual inspection because of the BT pedestrian walkway but a recent inspection has revealed cracking in the road surface along this edge; the amount of movement has been small, but enough to cause concern.

Realigning the road would cost £2m so repairs or widening by cutting into the landward slope would be Argyll and Bute’s only option.
