Opportunity missed for Pupils
Published:  09 May, 2008

CAMPBELTOWN Pupils missed a great opportunity to apply pressure at the top of the league when they went down 1-0 to a spirited Moorcroft team at Kintyre Park.

The first-half possession was all in favour of the Pupils as they attempted to steal into a deserved lead. A number of great chances went a-begging, although the best opportunity of the match was a through-ball to the speedy Alan Sinclair whose parting shot was saved by the fine young Moorcroft keeper. Fraser Wylie was prominent for the home side on the left hand side in the first forty-five minutes with his pace and committed attitude.

The second-half was frustrating as far as the home side was comcerned, the Pupils failing to find enough good possession to create the necessary breakthrough. Moorcroft held the ball for longer periods in the second forty-five, a decisive factor in the final outcome. Forced to play an inaccurate long-ball game, the home side never applied any level of consistent pressure to make the outcome so much better.

With the game heading for a scoreless draw - probable the right result over the ninety minutes - Moorcroft grabbed their opportunity when they netted with a shot driven shot across a stranded Neil McKay in the Pupils goal.

Moorcroft held possession cleverly in the closing minutes to deny any form of comeback, and the day which promised so much ended in disappointment for the home support.

Neil McKay in goal, Shaun Grumoli and Lewis McKay in central defence, and, Fraser Wylie on the left were best on the day for the home side. Alan Sinclair’s pace was always a threat - but accurate ball proved elusive.

Damage was limited with all the main challengers losing on Saturday past. With four games to go anything is possible as the league becomes close at the top. It promises to be an interesting final month of the championship.

With four games remaining, promotion is still very much in the Pupils’ hands after last Saturday’s results. The top four clubs in the division all lost.

Tomorrow (Saturday 10) the pupils travel to play Eaglesham. They are at home to St Joseph’s on May 17 and at home to Rutherglen on 24th. The final fixture is away to Dunoon on May 31.
