Baroness Michie dies at 74

BARONESS Ray Michie of Gallanach, the former MP of Argyll and Bute, died on Tuesday aged 74.

Baroness Michie, was Liberal Democrat MP for Argyll and Bute between 1992 and 2001. She was made a life peer after being succeeded by Alan Reid MP in 2001 and was the first to pledge the oath of allegiance in Gaelic.

Baroness Michie was also a member of Scottish Crofters Union and the National Farmers’ Union of Scotland, among many other commitments.

Alan Reid MP for Argyll and Bute: ‘Ray was a very caring person and that could be seen in her work, first as a speech therapist and then as MP. The language and the culture of the Gael and the Highlands and islands were very dear to her. The people of Argyll and Bute will always have a special place in their hearts for Ray Michie and I send my condolences to her family.’

Cllr Rory Colville, a former chairman of the Argyll and Bute Constituency Liberal Democrat Party said Mrs Michie was ‘a wonderful person’.
