THROWING up surprises is nothing new for the Kintyre Piping Society recitals, but on Saturday night in the Masonic Hall, there was one big surprise in the shape of a ladies pipe band. A first for Campbeltown and they certainly showed the boys the way to do it.
Under Pipe Major Fiona Mitchell they gave a great account of themselves with Marches, Strathspeys and Reels, and many more tunes.
The Society were having a night of local talent, and first up was Pipe Major Ian McKerral. Ian started off with a lively set of Marches and continued with Strathspeys, Reels and Hornpipe Jigs as well as Slow Airs. It’s a pity some more of his pupils were not there to hear how it should be played.
Next was Julie Blue, who plays for the Vale of Athol Pipe Band, and incidentally will give a concert here in Campbeltown in June. Julie played her moral Marches, Strathspeys and Reels, then Gavin Ferguson, home from Glasgow was next and proceeded with the usual tunes, and he too played well.
Fraser Wylie was also home from Glasgow for the occasion. Both him and Gavin play for the Scottish Power Pipe Band who play in Grade One. Both will be competing in the highland games circuit this year so we wish them all the best.
The ladies band were on next, and what a great night.
A large raffle was dispensed and Fear-an-tighe for the evening was Willie McCallum who kept things going smoothly.
The Kintyre Piping Society will be bringing the Vale of Athol Champion Band to Campbeltown Grammar School for a concert on June 7.
