AT Kinloch Park on Saturday Campbeltown Boys played host to Glencastle Sparta in Premier Division Two.

A frustrating match for the Boys, where sloppiness proved the home team’s downfall, and saw them sink to a three-goal defeat.

The worst possible start couldn’t have been imagined as Sparta, on an attack down the right flank, saw a low cross into the box finished sharply by their number 9 inside Robert Coffield’s bottom left hand post.

Sparta’s second goal was all the more frustrating. The away side’s central midfield anchorman was left in an incredible amount of space, and when a cross-field ball from a congested left-hand side found him, a lob over Coffield doubled their lead.

A neat finish, although an avoidable concession of a goal.

James Armour went close with a header for the Boys, but there was little reason for positivism at half time, and a determined team effort was required in the second half to mount an unlikely comeback.

The Whisky Mac’s sponsored Boys were far better in both attack than in defence during the second half, though the notable chances that presented themselves were wasted.

Ranald Watson saw his thundering effort come back off the crossbar, before another of his shots rifled from a defender’s block all the way to the half way line, where a Sparta attacker seized his opportunity and drove to the Boys’ box to score his team’s third goal, a sickening piece of misfortune for the home side.

A trip on David Gallacher inside the box meant a penalty kick for the Boys, and a chance to take consolation for their efforts, but Robert McGarrie’s shot, although on target, ultimately failed to beat the impressive Glencastle goalkeeper.

A disappointing result for the Boys sees them momentarily stranded at the foot of Premier Division Two, which means their encounter against Rolls Royce EK tomorrow (Saturday) assumes even greater importance.

Kick off is at 2.30pm at Kinloch Park.

The match ball for last weekend’s game was kindly sponsored by The Tasting Room.
