KINTYRE Marine Awareness weekend attracted a good number of people to the various activities organised over last weekend to celebrate Scotland’s seas.
As well as presentations from different people and organisations, children’s workshops and displays were held at Campbeltown Heritage during the Saturday morning.
In the afternoon Campbeltown Lifeboat Station opened its doors, and even though the weather was horrendous, quite a few people took the chance to visit the station and its lifeboats.
The weekend was organised by Argyll and Bute Beach Forum, and Firth of Clyde Forum, with Highlands and Islands Enterprise supporting the event.
The organisers were aiming to raise awareness of environmental issues about marine life around Kintyre, and are hoping to create a beach group to help conserve the beaches in the area.
Professor Ronald J Roberts, gave a talk about Kintyre and the Blue Revolution, Stan Philips, from Scottish Natural Heritage, explained in detail about the Machrihanish Dunes, Site of Special Interest and what type of plants and insects can be found, Robin Harvey from the Scottish Association for Marine Science presented information on ‘What makes Argyll and Bute so special?’
The presentations were concluded by Eddie Maguire from Machrihanish Wildlife Observatory, who showed photos of Wildlife Photography taken in Kintyre.
After lunch the Lifeboat Station was opened up to the public.
A beach clean at Westport Beach took place on Sunday morning, with people turning out dressed for the weather. More than 40 bags of rubbish were collected and transported to the car park thanks for the Coastguard.
Breaks Surf Shop provided a voucher for the person who put the most effort in whilst taking part in the beach clean. The winner was Cara Stalker.
On Sunday afternoon a visit to Machrihanish Environmental Lab proved popular, with Bill Roy and his colleagues taking people round a tour of the site.
