Carradale helps Malawi
Published:  02 April, 2008

MALAWI came to Carradale when Margaret Richardson and her husband Mike staged a photographic exhibition in Carradale Village Hall on Sunday afternoon.

They raised more than £180 for a health centre in Nkhota Khota (pronounced Kota Kota).

In September 2007 the couple spent three weeks with old friends in Malawi and as a thank you to their hosts offered to provide half the funding needed to build a fully-functioning health centre in the local village.

This is not as expensive as may be imagined as most material are provided by nature.

The bricks will be made and fired from clay, which is readily available, and the timber will come from a plentiful supply of trees with the roof made of bound grasses.

But the cost of fitting out the interior will be another, more expensive matter.

The village’s present health centre is a hut, which is so dark that medical examinations take place in the shade of a nearby fig tree.

The exhibition featured nearly 150 photographs taken in Malawi of the local wildlife and examples of everyday life in the country and the exhibition was complemented by a slide show.

Margaret and Mike would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously and those who gave of their time and expertise to help the stage the event.
