KINTYRE Forum on Community Care is celebrating the success of the Conference and Exhibition it organised.

A total of 28 different voluntary, statutory and public organisations took part and more than 100 people took part or dropped in to the event throughout the day.

‘Many of the different organisations said how useful it was to meet each other and members of the public were able to put a ‘face to a name’ which was one of the main aims of the day,’ said Susan Paterson who helped organise the event.

The main part of the day saw five excellent speakers talk on a number of subjects. Peter Harper of the British Red Cross spoke of their transport services and the need for volunteers as well as funding the service.

Suzy Gentle of Help the Aged, talked of her role in working with Older Peoples groups in supporting and developing services for these groups.

Tina Ellis, acting resource manger for Mental Health Services and Learning Disabilities with Argyll and Bute Council, spoke of the changes that are planned in the move of mental health from community care to a dedicated service.

Alison Leask of Autism Argyll praised the good school transition strategies that are in place but highlighted concerns for post school help and similarly for financial and health support in long term planning for the post school to pension age.

The final speaker was Douglas Boynton, an independent Consultant for Argyll and Bute Council for the older peoples redesign of the service. He spoke briefly on the reasons behind the need for the service in the light of the growing number of older people in Argyll and Bute and the council’s proposals for home care, day care and care homes.

After questions to the speakers the conference split into four workshops to discuss the themes of the day. The points raised in these workshops will be in the report of the conference which will be presented at the Kintyre Forum On Community Care Conference on April 30.
