CAMPBELTOWN Lifeboat crews were called to assist a stricken fishing vessel off Pladda Lighthouse, near Arran on Monday.

.47am and by 10.55am the five crew members, Stephen Scally, Trevor Scott Dodd, John Hill, Archie McFadyen and Grant Kennedy with Coxswain Johnny Stewart in charge left the harbour in the All Weather Lifeboat to help rescue the casualty, a fishing vessel called Quantas.

It took Campbeltown crews 40 minutes to reach Quantas, which was two miles off Pladda.

In that time, Navy Rescue Helicopter 177 from HMS Gannet had winched two of the three crew members off the stricken vessel that was taken on water due to a fractured sea water exhaust manifold.

Arran Inshore Lifeboat was also on scene, and they assisted by passing a small salvage pump to the Quantas to start to clear the water in the casualty’s engine room. Operations manager of Campbeltown Lifeboat, George Bradley said: ‘When our crews arrived on scene we passed our bigger pumps on board that rapidly got the water from the engine room. The casualty was towed by us to Campbeltown arriving at 2.25pm.’

The Quantas has now been repaired and is awaiting suitable weather for departure.
