YOUNG thespians took to the stage at Campbeltown Grammar School in the Scottish Community Drama Association Youth Finals (Western Division).
Abbey Youth Drama Group from Kilwinning who represented the Ayrshire District walked away winners with their play, ‘The Willow and the Pomegranate’ by Derrick Brown which was set in Ancient China. They will now go on to represent the West of Scotland in the Scottish finals in Stranraer in June.
Six talented groups held the audience spellbound as three plays were performed during the afternoon with another three being staged at night.
Argyll District representatives were members of Tarbert Academy Drama Club with the production ‘Is There Honey Still?’ by Claire Jones, set in World War 1. The directors were Sybil Bertioli and Susan Connor.
Kirkintilloch Players represented Glasgow with their play ‘Mmmbeth’ by Allison Williams.
‘A Simple task’ by Alen Haehnel was the play chosen by Kirkudbright Academy Drama Club who represented Stewartry District while Greenock Players Youth presented ‘Kids in Kilts’ (The Scottish Play) by Bill Siviter.
Rounding off the evening’s entertainment was Stranraer Drama Club Juniors with ‘Garlic and Lavender’ by Nick Warburton.
Campbeltown Grammar School was decorated with Scottish Community Drama Association (SCDA) posters, and were honoured with a visit from the Scottish chairman of SCDA Keith Robertson.
Some of the teams had to stay as far away as Carradale as there seemed not to be a bed left in the town for them to stay, and it is estimated that between all the actors, crews and supported there were 1000 people visiting Campbeltown in connection with the festival.
Jackie Westerman vice chairman of the western division said: ‘Teams had a great time and they all commented on the great hospitality they had from the people of Kintyre. It was a great day.’
