The Campbeltown Courier
Celebrating 65 years together
Published:  21 March, 2008

ACCORDING to William Penman, the secret to a long and happy marriage is to have an argument with your spouse every day.

And he should know, because yesterday, his parents Joe and Netta celebrated their sapphire wedding anniversary.

An incredible 65 years after tying the knot in Ayr on March 20, 1943, the couple are still going strong and love each other more than ever.

Originally from Lanarkshire, Joe had to leave his new wife soon after their wedding when he was posted to South Africa with the Royal Air Force during the war.

When he returned to Scotland after two years, Joe moved back to Kintyre to be with Netta and they lived in Stewarton for a few years before settling in Campbeltown’s Davaar Avenue.

They have now lived in the same house for the last 54 and a half years.

Now both aged 85, the couple have shared a lifetime of memories under that roof, including bringing up their three sons, Raymond aged 64; Dennis aged 60 and 56-year-old William.

Joe and Netta are also proud grandparents of six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Joe did a variety of jobs such as an electrician, working at the pit at Machrihanish, working in Springbank and working for the local authority when the original Meadows Park was being built. Netta worked in MacIver’s fruit shop and Auchinlea old folks home until she retired.

Proud William told The Courier this week: ‘The most important thing to both of them is their family, and it’s great that they are now celebrating their sapphire anniversary.

‘They argue with each other every day so it’s got to be a happy marriage. We had a terrific childhood with nothing but love from both parents, and we really hope they have a day to remember.’
