CO-OP customers got the chance to sample free fair trade products on Friday when Jan Nimmo, along with Co-op representatives were present to tell people about fair trade and about the work Jan has been carrying out lately as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.
As well as appearing at the Co-op on Longrow, Jan showcased her videos, Pura Vida? and Bonita: Ugly Bananas, at Campbeltown Grammar School on Friday morning, and talked to S3 Geography pupils about fair trade and trade unions for people in places like Ecuador.
These documentaries expose the devastating effects that agrochemicals used on Costa Rica’s banana plantations have, as well as making people aware of the products that aren’t fair trade and the effects they have on workers.
The two films were also on show during two short screenings at The Wee Picture House to draw Fairtrade Fortnight to a close.
Jan, originally from Campbeltown, has been gathering images and testimonies for her Green Gold multimedia project to make a series of portraits of banana workers in Latin America since 2000, and in 2002 made a field trip to Ecuador, and has managed to expose the struggle of the banana worker’s trade unions for basic human rights.
