CAREERS Scotland in connection with Campbeltown Grammar School held ‘I’m a CGS Pupil get me out here’ to give third year pupils a chance to think about their career options when they leave school.
The theme was set in relation to the TV programme ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ and the assembly hall was brightened up with suitable jungle decorations.
The pupils learned about different job industries, like the Forestry Commission, Army and Police, through challenges and questions that were set. More than 80 pupils took part during the event last week, and a group of sixth year pupils were on hand to help them through the activities. They got the chance to learn about different aspects of the jobs: what they entail, apprenticeships and job opportunities in the area.
As well as the Forestry Commission, the Army and Strathclyde Police, organisations such as bConstructive, Clyde Marine, Campbeltown Fire Brigade, Electrical Apprenticeships and Grow Our Own from Argyll and Bute Council also set up stands in the hall for the day.
Principal teacher of Enterprise at Campbeltown Grammar School Mr Ron Wilson, Kay Johnston from Careers Scotland, and Susan Housten who was representing S6, worked together to make the day a major success.
Kay Johnston from Careers Scotland who helped to co-ordinate the event said: ‘It has been really positive to see young people participate in such activities with so much enthusiasm. The aim of the day was to help them develop skills they can use in the future and encourage them to work as a team.’
Keeping with the jungle theme, the Home Economics department also got Katherine McGlynn from Springboard Scotland and who has a background in the restaurant trade, to show fifth year pupils the different techniques of cutting fruit to display in a hamper or for decoration.
To end a very productive day, Katherine along with a group from fifth year and with the help from Mrs Woodrow produced a display of decorated fruit in the canteen and fruit cocktails for all the pupils and people from the organisations.
