PRESIDENT John Johnston welcomed a full house to Campbeltown Bowling Club’s Burns Supper last Friday.
It was thoroughly enjoyed by all who had the privilege to attend and following Hugh MacDonald’s Selkirk Grace, chief haggis bearer Jimmy Anderson and piper Mark McCormick delivered the great chief of the pudding race to John Johnston for his usual, couthy Address to the Haggis.
Following the meal, John Morris treated the audience to a superb Immortal Memory that was rendered with a true passion for the Bard and his works while giving new insights into his life.
John is a retired teacher who was born in Campbeltown but now lives in Glasgow and is the son of Bert and Bella Morris, late and revered members of the Club.
Ian Silcock’s Toast to the Lassies was a gentle and amusing wind up of the fair sex who were present that also made ammunition for Fiona Hendrie’s rollicking reply to the Toast that followed.
This was a speech that had the crowd rolling in the aisles and left not a few of the male members seeking refuge under tables, including one who is expecting a Nobel prize for “being out standing in his field”. Needless to say he is a farmer.
Songs by Alistair Gillies and Agnes Johnston provided musical interludes before the vote of thanks from Vice-President Leslie Colville and the night was expertly rounded off with a dance to Alec McAllister and Dave Bisset.
