THE competition for the Dunaverty Heidbangers Cup was very close throughout the year with at least six players in contention.
George Bradley, winner for the previous four years was in joint second place with Stuart Muir two points behind Hamish Taylor by the end of February.
By the start of May George and Stuart had moved one point clear of Hamish, John Dickenson, Terry Fowler, Sandy Watson and Wallace Wylie.
July saw a three-way tie for the lead with George, Stuart and Terry while Hamish was one point adrift and one point clear of John, Sandy and Wallace.
September showed another change with Terry now on fifteen points, three clear of George, Hamish and Stuart. John was a further point behind. Through October and November Hamish notched up a first and second while George managed two seconds to put them on seventeen and sixteen respectively.
Sandy managed two firsts to put him on fourteen. The others had dropped behind as the decrease in their handicaps began to bite. Although Hamish was now playing off six he managed a win in December to clinch the Cup, which was presented to him by George at the annual dinner in the Muneroy Tearooms.
The Heidbangers have lost five members to cancer over the years the latest being Stewart Gillespie. His son John, as a tribute to his father, presented the Heidbangers with six prizes to be played for in this end of season game. The gesture was very much appreciated by the players as Stewart had been a very popular member of the group.
Once again the green-keepers Willy MacMillan and David Scullion had the course in fantastic condition despite the recent bad weather and club steward Nick Hind had performed his usual good task of keeping the Heidbangers fed and watered over the year.
Final placings, with one point added for each of twenty-six appearances: 1 Hamish Taylor 46, 2 Sandy Watson 44, 3 George Bradley 42, 4 John Dickenson 40.
