Nearly 80 young people entered into various running, jumping, and throwing events in the indoor athletics competition.

The Kintyre competition was the last of five local area competitions held in Argyll this winter.

More than 300 young athletes participated in the local area competitions with Kintyre having the highest entry.

Southend Primary school dominated the girls’ events in the younger age groups with Beth Ronald winning the under 9s and Kate Cameron the Under 11 champion. Beth won five events including 0.97m in the high jump and an impressive 4.36 metres in the standing triple jump. Beth also won the speed bounce, vertical jump and speed bounce.

Emma Lazarus from Dalintober was runner-up in the younger age group thanks to fine wins in the 2-lap race in 22.1 seconds and 48.2 in the 4-lap race.

Kate Cameron was the Argyll under 9 champion back in 2005 and will be in contention once again in the older age category in the Argyll final next weekend.

The Southend girl was well clear after a great all-round display winning seven out of the eight events. Kate recorded 19.6 seconds in the 2-lap time trial and 41.6 in the 4-lap and later cleared 1.10m in the high jump.

Her standing long jump of 1.95m and triple jump of 5.46m ensured overall success and the only event she failed to win was the javelin in which Emily Kerr from Castlehill excelled throwing 13.50m.

Kerry Robertson was under 13 champion winning six events but Kathryn Howell was not far behind thanks to high placing in most events and an exceptional win in the speed bounce recording 88 jumps in 30 secs to set a new Argyll age record adding two jumps to the old mark.

Kerry won the high jump clearing 1.25m and went on to win both the 2-lap and 4-lap races before wins in the standing long and triple jumps and finally the shot putt throwing 8.15m.

Rachael O’May from Castlehill was the other winner in this section with a 45cm leap in the vertical jump.

Under 15 champion Nicola Paterson won four events outright and tied with Nicole Anderson in the speed bounce.

Nicola won both running events, the standing long jump, shot putt and vertical jump and Nicole won the high jump and triple jump. Nicole’s effort of 6.52m in the triple was one of the day’s top performances although short of the Argyll age record.

Campbell O’May from Castlehill won a competitive under 9 contest ahead of Murray Barbour from Southend and Cameron Wylie, also from Castlehill. Campbell won the speed bounce and vertical jump and Murray was winner in the triple jump. Cameron had a fine double in the 2-lap and 4-lap races recording 21.3 and 45.5 respectively and also won the standing long jump.

Jordan Brown of Castlehill impressed in winning the high jump clearing 1.05m, and not far below the Argyll age record, but the top performance in this category was achieved by Connor Blackstock of Dalintober in the javelin. Connor threw 16.50m a distance not exceeded by the under 11 boys or girls.

Donald MacCallum, Dalintober, was under 11 champion thanks to four outright wins in the 2-lap (20.3), 4-lap (42.8), triple jump and javelin (16.00m).

Sam Ferguson from Castlehill was runner up sharing first place with Donald in the vertical jump and adding high places in most other events.

Calum Johnston, Castlehill, won the speed bounce with 74 jumps and shared first place in the high jump with Michael McKinlay from Dalintober, both boys clearing 1.15m.

Cameron Ronald from Southend won the standing long jump in this age group. The under 11 boys contest attracted the largest entry with 21 competitors.

Craig Lamont dominated the under 13 competition finishing ahead of Grant Jackson and Brendan Wilson. Craig won the 2-lap in 18.9 and recorded good marks in winning the long jump (2.11m) and triple jump (6.26M).

Craig also won the shot putt and tied with Grant Jackson in the vertical jump. Grant won the high jump and Brendan Wilson won the 4-lap in 40.1 and the speed bounce.

Argyll Final

Gary Turner was under 15 champion thanks to a good all-round performance winning seven out of the eight events. Gary’s only weak event was the speed bounce which was won by Lewis McFadyen.

Gary will now turn his hand to cross country running entering the West District championships this weekend before returning to Sports Hall events at the Argyll final in mid December.

Luke Angus and John Lamont had quite a battle in the under 17s with Luke having the advantage winning six events including 17.3 in the 2-lap and 37.2 in the 4-lap.

He cleared 1.60m in the high jump and his standing triple jump close to 8m was impressive. John won the standing long jump and shot putt.

The successful athletes will now be invited to compete in the Argyll Final to be held at Atlantis Leisure in Oban on Saturday, December 15 starting at 1pm with registration from noon.
