YOUNG farmers from Campbeltown and Mid Argyll gathered at Dippen Farm, Carradale last Friday to watch a cattle dressing demonstration by Duncan Semple.

Earlier in the day Duncan Semple had washed the cattle in preparation for the demonstration and he emphasised that this is part of the process that has to be done thoroughly.

When the young farmers joined him, Duncan showed them how to blow dry the cattle and put one of the calves into a crush before clipping its head and belly.

Duncan explained that the whole cattle dressing procedure usually takes about two hours to complete.

Duncan said: ‘I enjoy doing it. It’s easier to do when it’s your own cattle and they know you.

‘I’ve been involved in cattle dressing since I left school and it’s something the college education system can’t teach you, and as long as it helps other people to dress their cattle for show or sale, I’ll do all I can to help.

‘The group were keen to ask questions afterwards and it was much easier to show them than to try to explain it.’

Thomas Cameron chairman of Campbeltown Young Farmers said: ‘It was a very enjoyable night. We would like to thank Mr Semple for taking the time to demonstrate cattle dressing to both the Mid Argyll and Campbeltown Young Farmers and we will hopefully use it in the future for our own cattle dressing competitons.’
