THE PUPILS had to settle for one point after drawing last week’s match against Kilpatrick. Two cracking goals from last season’s top goal scorer, Gary Grumoli should have been enough to collect all three points but the Pupils gave away two clear goals as memories of last season’s defensive frailties were once again on show.
The Pupils started their match very well with a good pace to their game and Fraser Wylie got to the by-line several times and produced excellent crosses into the box but Kilpatrick survived the early pressure.
Midway through the first half the Pupils took the lead and Norman Thomson found Gary Grumoli at the edge of the box with a clever pass and the young striker skilfully skinned two defenders before scoring with a powerful low drive.
Kilpatrick equalized in the 44th minute after a defensive mix up. After clearing a free kick out the area the ball was played back in and with the Pupils players standing like statues appealing for offside the number eight prodded the ball past Neil McKay. The visitors went ahead very much against the run of play in the 58th minute.
Pupils keeper Neil McKay attempted to find Norman Thomson on the touchline but was short and Paterson volleyed the ball back over McKay into the roof of the net.
The Pupils equalizer was something similar, a defected clearance landed at the feet of Gary Grumoli, and he quickly saw the keeper stranded off his line and chipped home from 35 yards a wonderful piece of skill.
Kilpatrick were reduced to ten men late in the game and with a bit of late pressure from the Pupils saw Paul Grumoli’s effort ruled out for offside but the match finished all square. Saturday September 8 (tomorrow) will see the Pupils travel to Duntocher to play St Joseph’s where they hope to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
