THE first running of a new relay race from Tarbert to Campbeltown along the Kintyre Way has taken place.
The run, a distance of 66 miles, divided into three sections of approximately 22 miles was held on August 11. For this ‘trial run’, three teams and one solo runner took part.
The winning team, in an overall time of 11h 27m, consisted of Iain Mennie, Davie Atkin and Rob MacLennan, all from Garscube Harriers in Glasgow.
Second home, in 11h 41m, was a local team made up of Neil McKnight from Tarbert, Donald Campbell from Glenbarr, and Sid Gallagher from Campbeltown.
Close behind them, in 11h 48m, was the third team - Erwin Losekoot from Helensburgh, Rob Reid from Tarbert, and Phil Connor from Clachan.
The best section time was Donald Campbell’s 3h 28m from Clachan to Brackley.
Special mention also for Sid Gallagher and Phil Connor, who both put in excellent times in their first experience of running anything more than a half-marathon.
Star performer of the day was Eryk Grant from Harrogate, who became the first person ever to run the entire 66 miles from Tarbert to Campbeltown along the Kintyre Way in one day, in an impressive 13h 30m.
The long-distance runners were joined on the Clachan to Tayinloan section by three members of the local JogScotland group - Muriel MacKaveney, Lesley Scott and Frances Hardie, all from Tarbert.
Timings, race control and photography were in the capable hands of adventure-racer Lesley Taylor (of lost-dog-on-Ben-Cruachan fame). Thanks, Lesley, and thanks to Isla, Morag, Arthur and Neil for marshalling, and to Sue for her super support for Eryk.
The weather was showery - pleasant for running, but with low cloud hiding the normally beautiful views of Arran and Jura.
The going was soggy underfoot because of all the recent wet weather, and timings could probably be much improved in a dry spell.
It is hoped to make this an annual event.
