AUGUST sees the pre-season training regime start for the Kintye Rugby Club - something always noted in the diary but never really looked forward to.
The clubs three squads start training in earnest this week, with the adults training on Thursdays 7-9pm the Colts (S1 to S6) the same day at 4-5pm and the Dragons (P3 to P7) from 10 until 11 am - all training takes place at the Meadows regardless of the weather.
This season also see’s rugby coming to the Primary Schools, with five local Primary’s already signing up to a four-week block of rugby during school time with some 96 kids. This is a tremendous development that will hopefully lead to greater participation in both schools and club rugby in Argyll. The idea is that the 4 weeks introduction will culminate in a Mini World Cup being held in South Kintyre at the end of October, an event being organised by the Club, Active Schools and the SRU.
Both John Lamont and Rob Fox have been selected to represent the County at U16, and hopefully will be invited to attend trials for the Glasgow Division Squad at U16 too.
The club received fantastic news during the Summer holidays - it has been awarded £5,000 by the Awards for All grant scheme (part of the Lottery). The money is to be spent on equipment for the Youth Teams and for Rugby Development in South Kintyre.
The Dragons playing strip has been ordered, the design influenced by a drawing submitted by Bruce MacPherson - for which the club is grateful and will present Bruce with his own personalised replica shirt. Welldone and thanks Bruce. Frank Chinn and Donald Barr are both coaches for the Dragons, and have been awarded places on a professional coaching course in mid-September.
It’s been a really busy 12 months for the Club, and to celebrate its achievements the club will be hosting its Annual Dinner on September 15, tickets will be advertised locally.
